This volume, edited by Smuel Kriebel Brecht, is an enormous reference on the history of the Schwenkfelder church that chronicles the genealogy of the followers of Caspar Schwenkfelder, German religious reformer.  The book also includes photographs of people, places, and documents; historical sketches; church organization, maps, and other information.  Early settlers kept diaries and record books, and in the late 19th century there was a revival of interest amongst the church that resulted in many ancient records being found and secured, enabling the production of this work.

The Schwenkfelder families are descendants of the followers of Caspar Schwenkfeld [1489-1561], a Silesian nobleman and religious reformer.  His views, formed during Luther's Reformation, emphasized inner spirituality over outward form.  Schwenkfeld's concepts seemed to be middle-ground between the various branches of the newly formed Protestant movement.  Severely persecuted throughout the1600s and early 1700s, the Schwenkfelders found life in Germany unbearable.  They first sought refuge in Saxony, before emigrating to and settling in Pennsylvania.
