Hardback is overall in GOOD PLUS condition.

  • Pictorial covers with inked text and illustration have blue cloth at spine. 
  • Boards show some smudges, dings, scuffing, edgewear.  Corners are worn, with exposed board.  See photos.
  • Blue cloth spine is somewhat darkened with crushed ends.
  • Binding is fragile, with boards partially detached and loose feps.  See photos. 
  • Pastedowns and feps have some staining, wear, writing, edgewear.  See photos. 
  • Frontispiece is present.
  • Illustrations, twelve chromolithographs, are all present.  Full page plates are bright and clear, with marginal age-toning.  
  • Interior is gently age-toned, exhibits marginal toning, some smudges.  See photos.  
  • Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.

First Edition.  Large quarto format.  Illustrated boards feature the artwork of Frederick J. Boston and Elizabeth S. Tucker.  Heavy card stock pages printed in colored inks, with pictorial borders framing poems and stories.  Twelve chromolithographs, frontispiece plus eleven throughout, reproduce water color paintings of dogs and cats by Frederick J. Boston.  Binding is precarious, with end papers detached and separation showing.  A few pages show creasing close to binding edge and are fragile.  Still a beautiful children's book, showcasing the talents of two artists.  Condition is overall Good Plus.

Elizabeth S. Tucker was a distinguished 19th century Canadian author and artist known for her charming stories, poems and illustrations of children, their pets and their toys.  The title page lists some of her books:  Children of Colonial Days, Royal Little People, etc.

Frederick J. Boston (1855-1932) was an American painter and instructor, the first Art instructor at the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, and a founder of the Painters and Sculptors Club in New York.
