Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD- condition.

• Brown covers have blindstamped frame and ornament. 
• Boards show some wear, smudges, bumps, scuffing, edgewear.  Corners are worn with some signs of repair.  See photos.
• Spine has gilt text effaced, some repairs to spine strip, with crushed, chipped ends.  See photos.  
• Binding is secure. 
• New end papers and pastedowns. 
• Interior is gently age-toned, exhibits marginal toning, moderate foxing, smudges, staining, chipped corners at pg. 221 and 223, some corner creasing.  See photos. 
• Inside pages have scattered marginalia.  See photos.

First Edition, First Issue.  No advertisements, no rule above the publishers imprint on the copyright page, and with numeral 2 at the bottom of page 17.  Publisher's original brown cloth, decorated front and back with blind stamped frame, central medallion and ornamented corners.  Boards show their age and wear, with some signs of repairs made over the years, particularly to the corners and top of spine strip.  Gilt title at spine head is very dimmed.  New pastedowns and endpapers, else original condition.  Interior shows staining and foxing but remains very readable.  A few marks to the margins, no owner's marks.  Condition is overall Very Good Minus for this First Issue of this important book.

The Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858 are the most famous debates in American history.  While Lincoln lost the Senate election to the incumbent Douglas, the debates introduced the relatively unknown Lincoln to crowds across Illinois.  The collection of the debates and their publication and wide-spread sale turned Lincoln into a presidential candidate on the national stage.
