First Edition. Two volumes in tan wraps with black ink titles, text in French. Volume I, with emblem in red ink of the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, published as Tome VI of the Museum's Archives, Seventh Series (1958). Volume II, with inset 3x3" plate illustration (1967), would seem to be Part 2 (Nouvelles Investigations) and begins at page 111. Both volumes remain largely uncut; the interiors are bright and the plates very good indeed. Plates follow the text. Vol. I: 17 color plates reproduce watercolors by Roger Heim, 20 b/w plates. Vol. II: 11 plates, 5 of which are in color.
An important early study in ethno-mycology, being a summary and analysis of the authors' findings concerning the use of the psilocybin mushroom as a healing agent and religious sacrament by curandera María Sabina Magdalena García among the indigenous peoples of Oaxaca. Herein appear Wasson's controversial photographs of Maria Sabina and her hosting of a velada.
Roger Heim (1900-1979) was a French botanist specialising in mycology and tropical phytopathology. Heim would eventually work with Robert Gordon Wasson (1898-1986) in Mexico, studying hallucinogenic mushrooms, religion, and ethnomycology. Wasson, a Vice President for Public Relations at J.P. Morgan & Co., had little training in the field; Heim and other collaborating scientists brought their scientific expertise to the investigations into hallucinogenic mushrooms.
