John Chamberlain (1927-2011) was an American sculptor and artist whose long career brought Abstract Expressionism into three dimensions.  This catalogue was published in conjunction with the first retrospective of his work, held in 1971 at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York.  Forty years later, shortly after Chamberlain's death, the Guggenheim hosted a second,  comprehensive, exhibition devoted to his long career.  That exhibition explored the shifts in scale, materials, and techniques informed by the assemblage process that was central to his working method.
