JOCKEY CLUB Sketch of the Manners 2nd Ed, 3 Vols. British Society Gossip 1792

Product Description

Jockey Club, or a Sketch of the Manners of the Age

by anonymous (Charles Pigott)

"If it be more grateful to an ingenuous mind to celebrate the praises of humanity, it is no less necessary to expose the vices that deform it... To shew Vice in its own image, is the design of this publication... To attack the helpless and unfortunate, under any circumstances, is base and inhuman; but surely, when persons of the most exalted rank... abuse these advantages, it cannot be criminal to bring them forward on the public stage." And folowing this preface, the writer tells shameful and embarrassing stories of the peerage and persons of note. How humiliating? Enough that other books were written to denounce this one. Yet it was popular enough in its own day to remain in print through several editions. Even today, it attracts enough interest to be offered in modern reprints. Chapters are listed by the initials of the primary character being trounced (as if even this American, 200 years later, couldn't pick out quite a few of the names.)

This is a 1st printing of the 2nd edition of this book in 3 volumes. Vol 1: 188 pages; Vol 2: 186 pages; Vol 3: 210 pages. 5.25 x 8.25 inches. Printed for H.D. Symond, London. 1792.
