Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD condition, with a GOOD DJ under Mylar.

• Russet covers are mostly clean, with black cloth and white text at spine. 
• Boards show some edgewear.  Corners are worn, with exposed board.  See photos.
• Spine has white text and is bright with bumped ends.  
• Binding is strong.  
• Illustrated end papers/ pastedowns have some smudges, toning.  See photos. 
• Frontispiece is present.
• Interior is gently age-toned, more so at margins.  Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
• Text block edges have some foxing along fore edge. 
• DJ is nicely preserved behind Mylar and is backed with archival paper.
• Illustrated DJ has some edgewear, chipped corners, closed tears and small chips along head edge, bumping along foot edge, some soiling to back, fading of spine strip, chipping at spine ends.  See photos.

First Edition.  Publisher's russet boards with one-quarter black cloth, title in white along spine.  In the unclipped dust jacket, now preserved behind archival Mylar.  Illustrated end papers and author portrait (frontis) by West Indian artist Denis Williams.  Binding is firm and square.  Interior is gently toned; some foxing to fore edge of the text block.  Condition is overall Very Good under a Good dust jacket for the author's first novel.

George Lamming (1927-2022) was a novelist and essayist from Barbados.  He was among the last of a generation of Caribbean writers whose work traced their region’s transition from colonialism to independence.  Loosely autobiographical, In the Castle of My Skin tells the story of a boy growing up in Barbados at a time of social and economic unrest.  Typical of Lamming's fiction, the novel is full of dense imagery and metaphor, blending techniques and styles from poetry, memoir and theater.  It was a critical success, winning the Somerset Maugham Award and earning the author a Guggenheim fellowship.
