Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD condition, with a VERY GOOD DJ under Mylar.

• Black cloth covers are mostly clean.  Boards show some wear at foot, edgewear.  Corners are scuffed.  See photos.
• Spine has white and yellow text and is bright with softened ends.
• Binding is secure.  
• Pastedowns and feps have some staining, pencil marks. 
• Interior is gently age-toned, exhibits some smudges and light foxing pp. 201-230.  See photos.  
• Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
• Text block edges have untrimmed fore edges, publisher's yellow ink at head.  
• DJ looks nice behind Mylar and is backed with archival paper.
• Close examination of DJ reveals light edgewear including bumps and chipping, staining, darkening of spine, chipped corners and wear to return folds.  See photos.

An overall Very Good copy of this First Printing of the first book by then twenty-six year old Philip Roth.  Publisher's black cloth under the original dust jacket, price intact.  Edgewear to foot, and some spotting across the story "Epstein."

This first book from Philip Roth (1933-2018) was published to great acclaim, the recipient of a Literary Fellowship Award from the publisher.  From the jacket flap:  "At twenty-six, Philip Roth is a master storyteller.  This is the real thing -- fiction as wonderful, as outrageous, as unpredictabe as life."
