A military engineering work by the pioneer mathematician, physicist, and politician. Carnot was also a leader in the French revolutionary army and served under Napoleon, at whose behest he wrote this work.  It was Carnot's premise that neither valor nor effort was sufficient in itself, but together they could accomplish much.  Widely studied and put into practice, this work appeared in translation soon after its initial publication.

First edition, in French.
