First Edition. Publisher's beveled boards in caramel cloth with inked title and illustrations in orange, dark brown, and gilt. Some darkening to boards and edgewear; spine is dark with damage to foot and chipped ends. Interior is generally good, with a few faint pencil notations. An extensive publisher's catalogue is at the back.
This collection of Chinese stories, with line illustrations, was translated and adapted by Robert K. Douglas. Many of these stories appeared in British magazines before their publication here. An introduction by Douglas discusses the sources, themes, and tropes of Chinese literature.
Sir Robert Kennaway Douglas (1838-1913) was an English scholar of East Asia. Following seven years in China in the Consular Service, he was a Professor of Chinese at King's College, London.
