Described as a "splendid supplementary reader for first and second grades" in the Publisher's advertisements at the back of the book. This reader is a second installment in the adventures of Bunny and Susan Cotton-Tail, Grandpa Grumbles, and tricky Bushy-Tail. The author is Laura Rountree Smith (1876-1924), an American author and educator who carved a unique niche in early 20th-century children's literature. Smith's career coincided with a period of significant social change that included the Progressive Era's educational reforms. Her work reflected these shifts, emphasizing imaginative play, moral lessons, and the importance of childhood creativity. Smith's stories were entertaining while also teaching values and practical skills. In her many books, Laura Rountree Smith blended traditional folklore with contemporary themes, making her stories both timeless and relevant.
