Philadelphia quickly became, from the early days of the Republic, the center of the American map publishing industry.  Emerging technologies of the 19th century, such as steam lithography, enabled publishers to produce maps more easily.  Starting in 1865, the G.M. Hopkins Company emerged as one of the mainstays in American urban cartography.  Urban atlas publishers such as Hopkins included pertinent information important to real estate brokers, insurance companies, and railroads.
