A very good copy of this comprehensive pictorial history of carnivals in the United States, three volumes bound as two, with original dust jackets.  Joe McKennon, veteran of both carnival and circus, offers a history of what he calls America's "collective amusement industry," relying on photographs and material shared with him by carnival people.  The three volumes include a history of the carnival, from its European roots to its American incarnations, profiles of carnival owners and entertainers, and family trees of multi-generational carnival lineages.  Volume three covers the carnival through the 1970s and touches on how societal change affected the midway.

Volumes I (1971) and II (1972) are bound together, Fifth printing, 1983.  Volume III (1981), First printing.
