Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD condition.

  • Bright navy blue covers have blind stamped border with gilt at spine. 
  • Boards show some wear, smudges, edgewear.  Corners are sharp.  See photos.  
  • Spine has gilt text and is a little faded with crushed ends.
  • Binding is secure. 
  • Pastedowns and feps have some light staining, owner's marks.
  • Frontispiece is present and has intact tissue guard.
  • Interior is gently age-toned, exhibits an owner's embossed stamp on title page.  See photos. 
  • Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
  • Text block edges have gilt at head, deckle fore and foot edges, a few ink marks.  See photos.

First American Edition.  Publisher's bright navy boards with blind stamped border and gilt title on the spine.  A fine engraved portrait of the Chevalier de Pontgibauld faces the title, with tissue overlay.  An owner's name on the front end paper, and another owner's embossed stamp on the title page.  Interior is bright, some pages open to the stitches but binding is intact.  Condition is Very Good.  

This memoir by one of the numerous Frenchmen who joined the Patriot cause in America is here edited and translated into English by Robert B. Douglas.  The Chevalier De Pontgibaud, Charles Albert More (1758-1837), served as Lafayette's aide-de-camp in the American Revolutionary War.  His memoir also details his return to Europe and experiences during the French Revolution, and his 1793 return to America to collect $10,000 in back pay.
