William Carlos Williams (1883-1963) was an American poet and physician closely associated with modernism and imagism.  The eleven stories in this volume make use of his professional experience as a doctor, much more than his poems do.  Williams wrote, "This is the first book of short stories.  The stories are all about people I knew in the town, portraits of people who were my friends.  I was impressed by the picture of the times, depression years, the plight of the poor.  I wrote it down as I saw it.  The times -- that was the knife that was killing them."
