This copy of The Hasheesh Eater, in the publisher's olive cloth with cover design and illustrations taken from Aubrey Beardsley, is overall very good minus AS IS with a missing end paper inside the front cover. Boards show wear, and some opening edges show chipping; these faults notwithstanding, the text block is well spaced and clear. The frontispiece, here titled, "Visions of a Hasheesh Eater," is a doctored version of Beardsley's "Of a Neophyte and how the Black Art was revealed unto him by the Fiend Asomuel," and the title page is a doctored version of Beardsley's "The Kiss of Judas".
First published in 1857, The Hasheesh Eater went through four editions in the late 1850s and early 1860s, each put out by Harper & Brothers. This 1903 edition from S.G. Rains Company bears the original 1857 Harper copyright; it was the last complete edition until 1970.
