First Edition.  Publisher's white buckram boards with illustrated title stamped in black on top board and spine.  Title page printed in orange and black.  A collection of sixteen selections from Edgar Allan Poe, Catherine Crowe, Mary Shelley, and others.  With fifteen full page illustrations by William Brown MacDougall, inserted into the binding.  A very attractive copy, the uncommon white boards very fresh, with unmarked interior and signs of age confined to the end papers and text block edges.  Scarce in the first edition.

Edited by Margaret Armour (1860-1943), translator, poet, and playwright.  This anthology features classic gothic authors like Edgar Allan Poe, Mary Shelley, Thomas de Quincey, and Hans Christian Andersen, and includes stories such as those by Catherine Crowe (from Ghosts and Family Legends 1858) which are virtually impossible to find elsewhere.  Armour was married to the artist W.B. MacDougall (1868-1936), and they collaborated on a number of titles for which he made the illustrations.
