A compilation of 280 songs, words and music, that are part of the making of America, gathered by Carl Sandburg (1878-1967). Sandburg was an American poet, biographer, journalist, and editor, the winner of three Pulitzer Prizes, two for his poetry and one for his biography of Abraham Lincoln. During his lifetime, Sandburg enjoyed unrivaled appeal as a poet in his day, perhaps because the breadth of his experiences connected him with so many strands of American life.
Songs are grouped, with introductory comments on their origins and variants.
Dust jacket illustrations by Beth Krebs Morris.
Inscribed on the front end paper to H. Luke Stancil, With respect and good wishes, Carl Sandburg. Stancil was a minister and performer in Georgia.
