Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD condition, with a GOOD DJ under Mylar.

• Navy buckram covers with orange text and illustration. 
• Boards show some smudges, edgewear.  Corners are scuffed.  See photos.  
• Spine has orange text and is creased, a little sunned, with softened ends.  See photos.
• Binding is secure. 
• Pastedowns and feps have some light foxing, gift inscription. 
• Illustrations are bright and clear.  
• Interior is gently age-toned, exhibits some signs of use, chipping at head of pp. 18-19 where pages were opened.  See photos. 
• Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
• Text block edges have publisher's ink, unopened edges at pgs. 13-15.  
• Illustrated DJ is nicely preserved behind Mylar and is backed with archival paper.
• Close examination of DJ reveals some edgewear, chipped corners, closed tears along head edge, bumping along foot edge, some staining to back, staining to spine strip, is price-clipped on front return.  See photos.

First Edition.  Publisher's bright navy boards with titles and woodcut portrait of Sandburg in orange ink.  Illustrated DJ printed in red and black on white ground, as issued.  DJ is price-clipped.  Signed and inscribed on the front free end paper by Sandburg to H. Luke Stancil, With respect and good wishes.  Very Good condition, with a little edgewear and signs of handling that correspond with use. 

A compilation of 280 songs, words and music, that are part of the making of America, gathered by Carl Sandburg (1878-1967).  Sandburg was an American poet, biographer, journalist, and editor, the winner of three Pulitzer Prizes, two for his poetry and one for his biography of Abraham Lincoln.  During his lifetime, Sandburg enjoyed unrivaled appeal as a poet in his day, perhaps because the breadth of his experiences connected him with so many strands of American life. 

Songs are grouped, with introductory comments on their origins and variants.
