Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875–1950) was an American writer, known for his prolific output in the adventure, science fiction, and fantasy genres. He is best known for creating the character Tarzan, who appeared in a series of twenty-four books. Immediately popular, Tarzan became a cultural icon and remains one of the most successful fictional characters to this day. Burroughs capitalized on Tarzan in every possible way, including a syndicated Tarzan comic strip, films, and merchandise.
The illustrations are by Burroughs' son, John Coleman Burroughs (1913-1979).
