First French edition, First and Second parts, complete.  Contemporary thick boards, calf-bound with gilt decoration and text label on spine, now somewhat worn.  Interior is bright, plates are clear, with #4 torn at the folds.  A Very Good, entire, copy of this landmark work in the history of obstetrics.   

Hendrik Van Deventer (1651-1724) was a Dutch medical doctor celebrated for his success and technique in obstetrics.  His professional practice was remarkably advanced for the time, equally attentive to the well-being of both mother and infant, and sparing in the use of instruments such as forceps.  Through his practice and manual, intended for midwives, he greatly advanced contemporary knowledge of the pelvis and the mechanism of labor, laying the foundations of modern obstetrics.

First published in Latin (Leyden, 1701 Part I, 1723 Part II), Deventer's work was translated into numerous languages.  The French translation by Bruhier d'Ablaincourt (Paris, 1733) is considered the best and the most scientifically complete, and it established Deventer's fame in the wider European world.  Jacques-Jean Bruhier d'Ablaincourt (1685-1756) was a medical doctor, author, and translator from Angers.  Bruhier d'Ablaincourt's knowledge informed his translation, and he added to Deventer's text his own reflections, resulting in an amplified work on obstetrical practice.   

Inscribed on the half-title page, "Rigoine, éleve au chirurgie à Dijon," with ink flourishes.

First French edition.  Both parts published at Paris by the bookseller-printer Pierre Prault.
