• Boards show some smudges, wear to the shoulders, edgewear.  Corners are bumped, frayed.  See photos.  
• Illustrated spine has black text and is a little sunned with crushed, frayed ends.  See photos.
• Binding is secure. 
• Pastedowns and feps have some light foxing, bookseller sticker. 
• Frontispiece is present.
• Foldout map is present, in very good condition.
• Illustrations, colored engravings, are bright and clear.  
• Interior is gently age-toned, exhibits some scattered foxing, a turned in edge at pg. 111.  See photos.  
• Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks. 
• Text block edges have Gilt along head, untrimmed fore and foot edges.

Volume One of two volumes issued in 1926.  Original pictorial red cloth with gilt and black cover and spine illustrations, top edges gilt.  Plates and text are very nice, the interior gently tanned.  A smattering of spots at head near the front of the volume.  Condition is indeed Very Good.

George Catlin (1796-1872) spent several years studying the languages and customs of native Americans, making copious notes and studies for his paintings.  In 1841, the first edition of his Manners, Customs and Conditions of the North American Indians was published with uncolored plates.  This, the 1926 edition of Catlin’s monumental history, with 114 figures on 76 plates including a folding color-printed map, is prized for the quality of its colour plates.
