• Brown cloth covers with gilt title at spine. 
• Boards show some rubbing, smudges, edgewear.  Corners are bumped, scuffed, with exposed board.  See photos.
• Spine has gilt text and is bright with frayed, softened ends.  See photos.
• Binding is secure. 
• Pastedowns of brown paper have an owner's sticker, feps have some light staining. 
• Frontispiece, a portrait of Pendleton, is present and has intact tissue guard.
• Interior is gently age-toned, exhibits some smudges, some denting of upper corners.  See photos.  
• Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
• Text block edges have some staining.

First Edition.  Publisher's brown cloth with gilt title to spine.  Frontis portrait beneath tissue guard.  Biographical memoir of this Confederate officer and Episcopal priest, written by his daughter, based largely on letters and correspondence.  A generally Very Good original copy of this volume of Confederate history.  Binding is firm, interior is gently tanned, boards mostly clean with some wear to the spine ends.  Apart from a small owner's sticker, no writing or marks.  Scarce in the first edition.

Though called memoirs, this volume is a detailed biography of William Nelson Pendleton (1809-1883), detailing his life, education, and military career as Chief of Artillery for the Army of Northern Virginia, using his wartime letters and anecdotes.  It offers insight into Pendleton's character and his relationship with Robert E. Lee.
