• Boards show some smudges, scuffing, edgewear.  Corners are bumped, frayed, with exposed board.  See photos.
• Spines have gilt text and are darkened with crushed, frayed ends.
• Bindings have a little play, some loose signatures to Vol. II.  See photos. 
• Pastedowns and feps have some staining, owner's marks.
• Frontispieces, photo portraits, are present, with intact tissue guards.
• Foldout map is present.
• Illustrations are clear, some have tissue guards with captions.
• Interior is gently age-toned, exhibits some marginal toning, scattered foxing at edges, light edgewear.
• Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
• Text block edges have untrimmed, foxed fore edges, gilt along head.

A Good Plus copy of the rare FIRST edition.  Bound in red-brown cloth with gilt lettering to the spines and gilt lettering and embossing to the front boards.  The boards show signs of scuffing but are intact.  Bindings are tender, with rounding to the spines.  Some foxing to the fore edges and the end pages; the text blocks of both volumes are in very good condition with no markings.  All pages are intact and undamaged.  With 7 maps and plans with 4 in colour [one folding], 24 photogravures, 13 coloured plates, 4 b/w plates, and numerous text illustrations.
