Four volumes, rebound in half leather bindings with marble boards.  Letters of Mrs. Adams, the Wife of John Adams, third edition, 1841.  Together with Letters of John Adams, Addressed to His Wife, first edition, 1841.  Both series of correspondence edited by the Adams's grandson Charles Francis Adams.  All volumes are complete, with portrait frontispieces and original endpapers, beneath modern boards.  Interiors show some light scattered foxing, marginalia and underlining in pencil.  Condition is overall Very Good.

When the letters of Abigail Adams were first published in 1840 they were a huge success, so that a second expanded edition followed the same year.  Sustained demand led to the issue of a third edition in 1841 of Abigail's letters, plus two volumes of the letters from John Adams to his wife -- in essence, the other side of the correspondence.  Thus, the 1841 editions here for sale are the third edition for Abigail's letters and the first for John's letters to her.

The volumes of John Adams's letters are inscribed on the title page, "Calvin Morgan Jun, April 1842."
