A naval biography of James Lawrence (1781-1813), a young officer in the United States Navy who rose to fame during the War of 1812. Born in Burlington New Jersey, Lawrence joined the navy at the age of seventeen and quickly distinguished himself as a brave and skilled commander. During the War of 1812, he commanded USS Chesapeake in a single-ship action against HMS Shannon and died in the battle. He is probably best known today for his last words, "Don't give up the ship!," uttered during the capture of the Chesapeake. The quotation is still a popular naval battle cry.
The author, Albert Gleaves (1858-1937), also an officer in the U.S. Navy, drew on a variety of sources, including letters, diaries, and official documents, to paint a vivid portrait of Lawrence's life and career. Gleaves places Lawrence's story within the broader context of the War of 1812, and explores the themes of courage, leadership, and sacrifice.
