First American edition of this book illustrated by Marc Chagall, which first appeared as a double issue of Verve (Vol VII, Nos. 33-34). Original blue pictorial boards. No jacket. Illustrated with original lithographs, title page plus 16 more in color, with 12 b/w lithographs printed on the rear of the color plates; and 105 additional b/w heliogravures of Chagall's etchings throughout. Condition of the interior is Very Good; exterior is Very Good- with splitting at spine, edgewear to the boards.
The illustrations are the focus of this volume; they are supported by an opening "appreciation" by Meyer Schapiro and a poem by Jean Wahl. A block of explanatory captions follows the plates. All text in English.
First American Edition, produced in Paris. The imprint date is September 10, 1956. Rotogravure of the black and white plates was executed by the Master Printers Draeger Frères, and the color lithographs were printed by Mourlot Frères.
