Hardback is overall in GOOD+ condition.

  • Dark brown covers have beveled edges, blind stamped frame, gilt decoration and title.  
  • Quarter leatherbound.  
  • Boards show some wear, smudges, scuffing, abrasion at shoulders, edgewear.  Corners are worn, with exposed board.  See photos.  
  • Leather spine has gilt text and ornamentation and is scuffed and worn, with chipped, flaking ends.  See photos.
  • Binding is fragile, with old tape repairs at both covers, damage to adjacent sheets.  See photos. 
  • Pastedowns and feps have some light foxing, staining, wear.  
  • Outline maps are colored. 
  • Illustrations are bright and clear, many plates have lightly foxed tissue guards, with scattered foxing.  
  • Interior is gently age-toned, exhibits scattered foxing, some smudges, light edgewear especially to end sheets.  See photos.  
  • Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks. 
  • Text block edges have All Edges Gilt.

First Edition.  Brown boards, gilt decorations and lettering, leather spine with gilt decoration.  All Edges gilt.  Two page color map of Sussex and Warren Counties, gravure portraits of notable men plus plates of houses.  The true first edition of this scarce county history that includes the cities/towns of Phillipsburg, Newton, Sparta, Washington, Belvidere, Hope, and others.  Interior condition is generally Very Good.  Wear to the hinges, spine condition, and damage to end sheets resulting from old repairs make the volume's condition overall Good Plus.  Scarce. 

The compiler of this county history, James P. Snell, credits assistance from Professor W.W. Clayton "plus a numerous corps of writers."  A rich source of local and family history, including commerce and industry, for the New Jersey counties of Sussex and Warren from earliest settlement into the late 1800s.
