essay by Elizabeth Hess

illustrated by Futura [aka Lenny McGurr]

First limited edition, in French and English.  Normandy France:  Musée de Vire, 1989

Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD condition, with a VERY GOOD DJ under Mylar.

  • Unbleached buckram covers are mostly clean, with black ink title.  Boards show a little bowing, some wear at head edge.  Corners are sharp.  See photos.
  • Spine has black text and is bright with firm ends.
  • Binding is strong.
  • End papers/ pastedowns show little sign of age or wear; a faint smudge to endpaper at back.  See photos.
  • Full page photo portrait of the artist at work follows the title page.
  • Illustrations are bright and clear.
  • Interior exhibits minimal signs of age and wear.  Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
  • DJ looks great behind Mylar and is backed with archival paper.
  • Close examination of DJ reveals light edgewear, a small closed tear at head of spine, some color chipping to corners, possible bumping.  See photos.
  • PS2026.0401

Unpaginated. 9.25 x 9.5 inches

First, limited edition of 500 copies.  Text in French and English.  Unbleached buckram boards, square format, with facsimile signature in black ink on top board.  In the dust jacket, as issued, black with artist's tag in orange.  Full-page color reproductions of Futura 2000's paintings, with captions on facing pages.  Interior is very bright and fresh.  Some small blemishes to the cloth at head edge, and a little bowing to the boards.  Condition is overall Very Good+.

A Very Good copy of this scarce catalogue from a 1989 exhibition dedicated to then-new works by the artist known as Futura 2000 held at the Musée de Vire in Normandy, France.  Leonard Hilton McGurr (b. 1955), known as Futura, and formerly known as Futura 2000, is an American artist.  Futura began painting graffiti as a teenager in the 1970s in New York and crossed over into the early 1980s art boom.  An introductory essay, "Breaking and Entering," by Elizabeth Hess of the Village Voice puts Futura's work into the context of the New York City street art scene of the 1970s and 1980s.

First edition, limited to 500 copies.  Printed in France.
