  • PS2025.0218

630 pages. 5.75 x 8.5 inches

First Edition.  Red boards have gilt monogram, with black cloth at spine.  Unclipped dust jacket with $6.95 price on front return features author photo on back.  Binding is supple, interior unmarked.  Signed and inscrbed to Walter Goldwater on the front end paper.  Condition is Very Good Plus, with just a little shelf rubbing to foot and dust at head.  An uncommon title.

The fifth book by American novelist and screenwriter Calder Willingham (1922-1995), generally recognized as his finest work.  Part of the gritty, realistic new breed of postwar novelists, Willingham lived and wrote in New York City for ten years alongside Norman Mailer, Truman Capote, Gore Vidal, and others.  Willingham's work is now generally out of print, and most current references refer to him as one of the under-appreciated talents of his generation.

A very interesting association copy.  Inscribed to Walter Goldwater on the end paper by Willingham, with mention of Goldwater's qualities as bookman, collector of incunabula, chess player, and sportsman.  Walter Goldwater (1907-1985) was an American antiquarian bookseller and founder of University Place Book Shop in Manhattan.  He was also co-founder and publisher of Dissent magazine and a noted tournament chess player.

First Edition.  Signed and inscribed by author on half-title page.
