First Edition. Publisher's green cloth with title stamped in gilt. Illustrated, with an Index. Travel memoir through Russia and East Asia by a Catholic prelate. Boards have a few blemishes, untrimmed edges are foxed. Binding is cracked at back cover, otherwise secure. Interior is very nice, bright and very legible. Very scarce in commerce. Condition is overall Very Good.
The Hungarian prelate Monsignor Count Vay de Vaya and Luskod (1863-1948, born Péter Vay) shares his personal journeys through four major Asian and Eurasian empires during a time of intense political and social transition. Vay includes vivid descriptions of and encounters with the rulers Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, the Empress Dowager of China, and the Emperor of Korea. Additionally, in his role as a Catholic monsignor, Vay documents the work of Catholic missions, local churches, and charitable institutions in the Far East.
