Unusual and scarce very early edition of this unpaginated small folio. According to the documentation, ie. Rulan-Miller catalog c. 1975, this is" an unrecorded variant, coming from the publisher's own collection."

Edition Points-of-Note:

1. Open face title lettering,
2. Title spacing and alignment on cover,
3. Slightly different colors in cover art,
4. Full-color center two-page image titled "Caught In The Circle" is printed in red and blue as called for by McCracken.
5. 13 additional vignette illustrations NOT called for by McCracken.

Tipped-in, undated ALS on letterhead marked as from New Rochelle, NY to the publisher, referencing one of the images.

Overall in VERY GOOD condition.

• Cream-colored boards are decorated with full-color soldier, with a cloth backstrip on the spine.
• Inside pages are free of stray marks.
• Pictures and interior are in excellent condition.
• Front pastedown/ffep has a tipped-in undated ALS (Autographed Letter Signed--A handwritten letter signed by the author)
• Covers and spine are dirty. Front cover has a small dark blemish as noted in photo.
• Quite a bit of edgewear is evident, including crushed spine ends and exposed board at corners.
• Inner hinge is cracked and a little loose.
• One page near beginning is loose and unattached to binding.
• Book may exhibit additional minor signs of age or wear.

Wister wrote the verses to accompany Remington's art. This book is known to include 68 illustrations: 28 full-page, 33 vignettes, 6 double-page and 1 full-color printed, all on uncoated stock.

Frederic Sackrider Remington (1861-1909) was an American artist whose work focused on depicting the American Old West. He's also considered unique for his coverage on the everyday man and indigenous Americans, at a time when most artists focused on "persons of note."

Owen Wister (1860-1938) was an American writer and historian, considered the "father" of western fiction.

PROVENANCE: Includes consignment documentation documenting the book back to 1975 from Barbara Johnson of Princeton, NJ to the reputable bookseller Mr. Rulon-Miller of RI. All copied documents included in the sale.
