Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD- condition.

• Red covers with photo illustration and titles in gilt and pale gray.   
• Boards show some wear, smudges, bumps, edgewear.  Corners are bumped, scuffed with exposed board.  See photos.
• Spine has gilt and gray text and is faded with chipped, frayed ends.  See photos.
• Binding is fragile, with some pages a bit loose.  See photos. 
• Pastedowns and feps have some toning, staining, bookseller marks, owner's inscription.  
• Frontispiece is present.
• Title page shows a smudge.  See photos.
• Illustrations, half-tone photographs, are bright and clear.  
• Interior is gently age-toned, exhibits light edgewear.  Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.

First Edition.  Publisher's red cloth with inset photo illustration, gilt and gray text, blind stamping.  Illustrated throughout with half-tone photographs.  Sunned, with wear, at spine.  Juvenile novel is a little tender in its hinges, with a heavy text block straining the binding.  Uncommon in the first edition; condition is overall Very Good Minus.

A juvenile adventure written by Alexander Black (1859–1940) to capitalize on the turn-of-the-century amateur camera craze.  The story follows Allan Hartel, a young amateur photographer, and his friends as they embark on photographic adventures — from documenting the chaos of an escaped circus elephant to investigating a local factory fire and joining a community camera club.  The 1899 first edition features actual photographic illustrations captured by the author.
