Co-founded and co-edited by Willoughby Sharp and Liza Béar, Avalanche was an American New York City-based arts magazine that existed for the six years between 1970 and 1976. Thirteen issues, all in black and white, were produced: numbers one through eight, here for sale, were square format magazines; numbers nine through thirteen were published in newspaper format.
Seen as a counterpart to Andy Warhol's magazine Interview, Avalanche played a crucial role in connecting the experimental art scenes of New York and Europe in the early 1970s. Its mission was to help publicize the newest and most radical art, letting artists speak for themselves. Issues contained long format interviews, original artist texts, and documents, which are today important primary resources for artists such as Joseph Bueys, Vito Acconci, Robert Smithson, Gordon Matta-Clark, among many others.
