A Good copy of the Scarce 1795 Fourth Edition of this important work of medicine.  Folio format, full contemporary calf binding with leather and gilt title label on the spine.  Front board is detached and rear board threatening.  End papers are missing and title page is very worn as a consequence.  Most notable is the section of full page plates, here bound at the front of the volume, striking in their detail and generous size.

Dr George Motherby (1731-1793) was a Yorkshire born physician and medical writer who practised in Highgate.  He was one of the pioneers of the variolation method of immunization against smallpox, which he described in an entry in his Dictionary.

The Fourth Edition, published in 1795.  In his Preface to the Fourth Edition, George Wallis explained the advances to medical science that justified a new edition just four years after the Third Edition (1791).
