This history of political theory is the work of two brothers, R.W. Carlyle and A.J. Carlyle.  Begun in 1892, it was worked on until the death of R.W. Carlyle in 1932, and then brought to completion by A.J. Carlyle.  Initially interested in theories of the state in the later Middle Ages, the brothers found themselves reaching back in time in order to chronicle political theory from its earliest development.

Volume 1, Fourth impression; Volumes 2-5, Third impression; Volume 6, Second impression.
