- Binding is tender, with some separation at front cover, stitches visible at some openings.
- Pastedowns and feps have some light staining, bookseller sticker, pencil marks.

First edition. Contemporary one-quarter burgundy morocco with marbled boards, blind tooling. Spine with gilt bands, black label and title in gilt: "Barrow's Artic (sic) Regions." Binding is intact, tender at shoulder of top board. Interior gently tanned, some washy staining, light foxing to pages of the Appendix at rear. Six-panel map of the Arctic Regions is bound in as Frontis, with some light spotting, Very Good plus condition. Volume is complete and overall Very Good.
Sir John Barrow (1764-1848), a founder and early president of the Royal Geographical Society, served as Second Secretary to the Admiralty for forty years, with the responsibility for promoting polar exploration. This chronological history of voyages into the Arctic regions runs from the earliest Scandinavian voyages to recent (early 19th c.) expeditions under the orders of Captains Ross and Buchan. An Appendix at the rear, with three illustrations, includes two accounts from expeditions.
