A lovely example of the art and craft which were the output of The Perishable Press under the direction of Walter Hamady (1940-2019).  Walter Hamady and John Wilde (1919-2006) were colleagues in the Art Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Wilde, a painter and draftsman with a surrealist bent, provided illustrations for books published by Hamady at The Perishable Press.

This work features a selection of drawings, mostly from the year 1944, from a sketchbook by John Wilde.  It includes an introduction by Lincoln Kirstein.  Wrapped in Shadwell paper from Hamady's manufactory and generously printed on doubled sheets of Mohawk Vellum Cream, 44 Wilde 1944 captures all the elements of The Perishable Press.  It is tactile, intimate, an invitation into the working collaboration of the consummate craftsmen and artists at work in Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin.

One of 200 copies produced.  Binding by Bonnie Stahlecker.
