Product Description

Town Planning in Practice

by Raymond Unwin

SUBTITLE: An introduction to the art of designing cities and suburbs.

This excellent facsimile reprint includes of the original 1909 publication includes a new preface by urban planner Andres Duany (1949-) and a new introduction by Professor Walter Littlefield Creese (1919-2002). Town Planning in Practice is considered one of the pillars of urban design theory.

Sir Raymond Unwin (1863-1940) argued that in town planning, "the planner needs to understand the beauty of old cities but also the changing conditions of today to ensure his or her design is realistic. They should also consider the requirements of the inhabitants and the circumstances of the site."(urbanism)

Overall, this is an extraordinary compendium of images and theories on urban design. Unwin was perhaps the greatest figure of the Garden City movement, which has had a tremendous impact on planning in both Europe and the United States. The remarkable text is accompanied by 310 illustrations, including photographs, plans, drawings, and maps.
