Hardback is overall in GOOD condition.
- Publisher's original black cloth covers are mostly clean though very worn at edges, with paper title label.
- Boards are edge worn and exposed. Corners are bumped and worn, with exposed board.
- Spine has text label and is rubbed, with chipped and frayed ends.
- Binding is shaken.
- Ex-library book with stamped plate on fep: "Capitol Circulating Library Service Co., 175 Fifth Avenue, New York."
- Endpapers and feps are age toned, with some owner's marks.
- Interior is age-toned, exhibits some marks and stains, a couple of turned down corners (see page 152), chipped page edges at page 257. Please see photographs for details of condition.

Ernest Hemingway's debut novel about war-weary American ex-patriots in Spain. The title page introduces Hemingway as the author of "The Torrents of Spring," and "In Our Time," reminding the modern reader that Hemingway's fame as a novelist was yet to be established.
In the first printing, the first edition had a typographical error on page 181; this copy is the second state of the first edition, with the word "stopped" corrected.
