As with McCarthy's other novels, adventure is the main achievement of this story, which unfolds in a harsh American wilderness. The protagonists are a man and his young son, who are alone in that cruel, merciless environment. It is a tale at once of brutality and filial love, in which both characters only have one another and the ever-enduring hope for survival and better times.

Cormac McCarthy (b. 1933) is an American novelist, playwright, and screenwriter. He is the author of ten novels that belong to the Southern Gothic, Western, and post-apocalyptic genres. Several of his writings have been adapted for the screen.
