Told in a passionate and breathtaking narration, this is the account of a true British hunter whose adventures led him to explore the Ceylon (modern Sri Lanka), an island south of India in the Indian Ocean. An extraordinary land where not only game but splendid and varied landscapes abound, Ceylon is both background and the main subject for Baker's captivating narration. For him, hunting is a sport the value of which rests not in killing and slaughtering, but in the thrill of the challenge, and the pleasure in the satisfaction of a tough catch. Discussing the various sorts of game present in the local environment, narrating in full detail the tale of his most spectacular and rewarding successes, the volume is a real manual for the hunter as much as it is a tale of amazing adventure, and finally a personal account of the passion of a lifetime.

Bookplate of Robert Watson Sparks (1836-1918), a prominent British military officer who served in several wars. His religious and charitable contribution to his community earned him a memorial in the Holy Trinity Church in Richmond Upon Thames in England.
