Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD- condition.

  • Black cloth covers have blind stamped illustration, gilt title on spine, Borzoi stamp on back cover. 
  • Boards show some smudges, aging, edgewear.  Corners are bumped, frayed.  
  • Spine has gilt text dimmed and is a little sunned.  Ends have been professionally reinforced.  See photos.   
  • Binding is secure.  
  • Pastedowns and feps are age toned.  Bookplate on front pastedown. 
  • Ex libris Marianne and Paul Steiner.  See photos. 
  • Interior is gently age-toned, exhibits some smudges.  See photos.  
  • Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
  • Text block edges have deckle fore and foot edges.

First American edition of Camus's La Peste, published in English translation just a year after its publication in France.  Translated from the French by Stuart Gilbert (1883-1969), who had previously made the English translation of The Stranger

PROVENANCE:  from the library of Marianne and Paul Steiner, he the founder of Chanticleer Press and both of them having fled the Nazi regime in Europe.
