This is a beautiful catalog of the works of a great American artist, as well as an interesting biography that approaches the woman as much as her work. The essays and plates pair full-color reproductions of her works with photographs of the behind-the-scenes life of the artist, giving the key to her inspiration as well as revealing some secrets about the source of her calling as a painter.

Joan Mitchell (1925-1992) was an American "second generation" abstract expressionist painter and print-maker. A member of the American abstract expressionist movement, she however spent most of her professional life in France. She is noted for having been one of the few female artists in her era to have gained public acclaim. Her works are featured in major museums and collections in the United States and Europe.

Jane Livingston is an American art curator, the author of numerous art books and catalogs. Now an independent art curator, she was curator at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. She was at the origin of the publication of a book presenting the complete works of Richard Diebenkorn, a painter whose works had been under-represented in art literature. [Wikipedia]
