Ying-Yai Sheng-Lan: 'The Overall Survey of the Ocean's Shores'

by Ma Huan

Equipped with stellar diagrams showing the positions of the stars guiding the ships all along the way, complete with maps of the places explored, here is a remarkable volume on the Chinese expeditions made under the emperor Cheng Ho, with a translation of a work by one of his men who participated in many of these travels. Starting off a woodcutter, Ma Huan came to accompany the admiral Zheng He on three of his seven expeditions, which took them to various countries along the shore, accurately described in this book with various fascinating details about their inhabitants and the surroundings. Any reader fascinated with travel and exploration and the exoticism and beauty of Asia will find this to be a treasure of discovery, not only of another place but of another time, the time of the emperors in China and the explorations they made of their shores. 393 pages. 6.5 x 9.5 inches.

Illustrated with B&W line drawings, as well as maps and "stellar diagrams" showing the guiding stars of the explorers for various places. Contains several appendices, a bibliography and an index. Includes a giant map of the Eastern Shores.
