• Dark brown leatherbound covers have blind tooling, gilt spine panel. 
• Boards show some scuffing, wear to shoulders, edgewear.  Corners are scuffed, with exposed board.  See photos.
• Spine has gilt text and illustration and is bright with bumped, frayed ends.  See photos. 
• Binding is secure.   
• Marble end papers/ pastedowns have a chipped corner at back cover.  Feps have some staining. 
• Second engraved title page is present. 
• Illustrations are bright and clear, plates are age toned, with scattered foxing, some offset shadows from facing pages.  
• Interior is gently age-toned, exhibits scattered light foxing, edgewear to two leaves following page 360.  Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.  See photos.
• Text block edges have remnants of marbling.

A Very Good copy of this popular mid-19th century study of Native American tribes in North and South America.  Publisher's brown leather boards, fully tooled, with gilt text and illustration at the spine.  Illustrated with engraved plates with color.  Text block features ruled frame on each page.  A complete and original, as issued, copy.

This is the only book authored by Charles De Wolf Brownell (1822-1909), a Rhode Island born attorney and notable landscape artist.  Brownell appended to the Preface a list of works that he consulted.  The engraved illustrations are "entirely new, many of which are from original designs, executed in the best style of the art, by the first artists in America," according to the title page.
