Addressing the notion of the individual self separate from the world in which it exists, The Book is one of the many written by Alan Watts (1915-1973).  Born in England, Watts spent his career as a writer and "philosophical entertainer" in California.  He interpreted and popularized Eastern traditions -- Buddhist, Taoist, and Hindu -- for a Western audience in books such as The Way of Zen.

A handsome volume written in conversational style.  Following the text is a list of "The Books" that engage with similar questions.
