This is a novella detailing the successive, increasingly bizarre sexual perversions of a couple of teenage lovers. Deemed one of the most important writers of the 20th century by Michel Foucault, Bataille has produced a work that "obliges us to confront the idea of pornography as a serious literary genre" as declared by Susan Sontag.

Georges Bataille (1897-1962) was a French intellectual and literary figure whose field of work stretched over literature, philosophy, anthropology, consumerism, sociology and art history. His writings include novels, essays and poetry, in which he explores the themes of eroticism, mysticism, surrealism, and transgression. His influence was vast on philosophy and social theory, including post-structuralism.
