Song Without Words: A Book of Engravings on Wood

First, limited edition, signed by the author.  New York:  Random House Inc., 1936  

Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD condition, with a GOOD slipcover.

  • Cream paper covers, three-quarters bound in copper foil, show commensurate wear and rubbing.
  • Boards show some wear.  Corners are sharp, with some rubbing of foil.  
  • Spine has red text and is darkened, with bumped ends.
  • Binding is firm.   
  • Endpapers and feps have some light foxing, with staining especially at gutters.  Please see photographs for details of condition. 
  • Illustrations [are bright and clear.  
  • Interior is gently age-toned.   
  • Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks. 
  • Text block edges have deckle alternate fore edges, top edges are uncut. 
  • Matching slipcover covered with cream paper and decorated with copper foil band shows signs of age and wear.  Please see photographs for condition.

One of Lynd Ward's books without words, made up of wood engravings, strongly cut and printed in black and white.  Ward's work was an influence on the development of the graphic novel.

Song Without Words was published in 1936 in an edition of 1250 copies.  This copy is number 1115, signed by the author on the verso of the title page.  Printed by the L.F. White Company and bound by H. Wolff.
