Originally published anonymously to avoid possible reincarceration for disloyalty, William Penn (1644-1718) offers 299 short and concise Quaker-influenced maxims and reflections in this book. "Printed at the Essex House Press, under the care of C. R. Ashbee, with a wood block on the title page by T. Sturge Moore. Published in England by Edward Arnold, and sold in America by Samuel Buckley & Co., New York." Printed in red and black throughout with decorative woodblock capitals for each maxim or reflection. This special edition is printed in a full vellum binding, and its pages are uncut and unopened. 257 pages, 4.75 X 6 inches.

This limited edition is hand-numbered as #218 of 250 printed.

First Edition thus, published by: Essex Press / Edward Arnold, London. 1901.

Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD condition.

  • Bound in full vellum over thin, sturdy boards.
  • Binding is secure, with occasional gaps between signatures.
  • Covers exhibit moderate staining to bottom inch of back board with lighter staining above.
  • Front board has light staining and dirt.
  • Both boards are slightly bowed.
  • Black ink title on spine is clear.
  • Shoulders show some rubbing/dirt.
  • At bottom left of spine edge is a .5" X .25" shallow hole with staining.
  • Back pastedown has a small pencil mark / sig(?).
  • Inside pages are free of marginalia and intentional marks.
  • Most pages are uncut at top and fore edges.
  • Book may exhibit additional minor signs of age or wear.
