REMINISCENCES OF GEORGIA Emily Burke 1850 Black Americana Slavery Plantation 1st
Product Description
Reminiscences of Georgia
by Emily P. Burke
A collection of 30 letters originally published in a New England journal. Her intent was to share a Northerner's view of everyday life in the South, to satisfy a general curiosity and to help future teachers prepare for their relocation. She tells of life in Savannah, her tours to plantations, what she sees of poor whites in the country and her unhappy observations of slavery. 252 pages. 4.5 x 7 inches.
"It is with mingled emotions of pain and pleasure that I think of leaving a place that has become so dear to me," she writes in the conclusion of the book. As such, when the book was republished in 1978 it was titled "Pleasure and Pain: Reminiscences of Georgia In The 1840s."
FIRST EDITION, published by: James M Fitch, Oberlin, Ohio. 1850.
